Disease According to the Law of 5 Elements
1. Reminder of the Law of the 5 Elements


Figure on the left represents the Law of the 5 Elements
- The outer circle represents the generating cycle or (Mother-Child cycle).
- The arrows inside represent the cycles of domination or (submission)
- The organs are of Yin nature, because they contain more blood than Energy, and are located inside the circle (Heart-Master of the Heart or Pericardium, Spleen-Pancreas, Lungs, Kidneys, Liver).
- The viscera are Yang in nature, as they contain more Energy than blood, and are located outside the circle (Small Intestine-Three Heater, Stomach, Large Intestine or Colon, Bladder, Gallbladder).

Figure on the right shows the cyclic movement of Yin and Yang as well as the notion of Yin in Yang and Yang in Yin.
- the white zone on the left represents the Yang (Yang being born at the bottom, will become maximum Yang at the top)
- the black zone on the right represents the Yin (Yin rising at the top will become maximum Yin at the bottom)
- the cyclic movement of the transmutation from Yin to Yang and from Yang to Yin is a perpetual movement.
- the small black circle at the top symbolizes Yin in Yang
- the small white circle at the bottom symbolizes the Yang in the Yin

Meaning of Yin in Yang and Yang in Yin
On earth the water represents Yin, in the sky the sun represents Yang. As the sun heats up, the water evaporates, rises and forms water vapour (small black circle at the top).

The water vapours (Yang) will condense and return, in the form of precipitation, to all the surfaces of water on earth (small white circle at the bottom).

2. Identification of a disease
Any imbalance leads to disease. QiQongTherapy, a branch of Complementary Medicine, will detect the imbalance of an organ or viscera according to the following criteria:
- Law of the 5 Elements
- Energy-Alimentation-Mental
- Yin or Yang: disease of the organ or viscera by the symptoms reported by the patient, or detected by observation
- Excess or Deficiency: by the tensiometer, by observation
- Blood glucose: by the glucometer
- Blood pH: through the pH paper
- Heat or Cold: by the signs observed and the laser thermometer
- Identification of the failure of either the Structure or Function, or both, of the affected organ or viscera: by acupuncture points called "Well" points located at the tips of the fingers and toes
Ex: a liver that is sclerosed (structure affected), but still functions normally (function intact).

3. Concept of structure and function
Element Earth is taken as an example. Stomach is a Yang viscera, Spleen-Pancreas is a Yin organ.

The function of Spleen is to:
- produce blood
- produce insulin (spleen-pancreas)
- regulate proteins - lipids - glucose - oxygen
- Carry nerve impulses, oxygen, blood with all the nutritive ingredients to all the cells of the body
There is only one spleen, but there are two meridians. The meridian located on the same side of the Spleen, i.e., on the left side of the body, gives information about its structure.
The Spleen meridian on the right side of the body provides information about its function.

In the human body, Stomach and Spleen-Pancreas are located on the left side. The point "Well" of the spleen: 1 Sp /Yinbai/ Ẩn Bạch located at the internal nail corner of the left big toe, gives information on its structure (swollen, shrivelled.... ).

The normal pressure at this point awakens pain indicating Excess. Strong pressure at this point does not awaken any pain indicates Insufficiency.

The point "Well" of the Spleen: 1 Sp /Yinbai/ Ẩn Bạch at the internal nail angle of the right big toe, gives information on the function of the Spleen (production or not of blood, secretion or not of insulin....). At pressure, pain indicates Excess, no pain indicates Insufficiency.

The degree of severity of the impairment of function or structure is detectable by the values of the tensiometer. Ex.: Inflammation and swelling of the spleen-structure, the point 1Sp/Yinbai/Ẩn Bạch ́ on the left big toe would be painful at the pressure, and the systolic pressure in the left arm would also be high.

The same investigation applies to the other organs and viscera.

Exceptions:
• The 2 "Well" points of the bladder meridians, at the external nail angle of the little toe: 67V/Zhiyin/ Chí Âm on the left and right, give information on both the function and structure of the bladder. On the left, this point provides information on the left portion of the prostate; on the right, the right portion of the prostate.

• The "Well" point of the heart at the inner nail corner of the little finger: 9C / Shao Chong/ Thiếu Xung on the left informs about the structure of the heart; on the right, the function of the heart.

4. Diabetes case study
Often a diet rich in sugary substances will raise the blood sugar level, i.e., hyperglycemia or diabetes.

Sweetness is related to the Earth Element. Too much sugar means that the Earth is in Excess Sugar. Sugar generates Energy and Heat, so there is Excess Heat to the Earth. Earth will no longer accept the Heat from the Fire Element, in addition, it will transmit Heat to Metal, thus putting 3 consecutive Elements in Excess Heat: Fire-Earth-Metal. This will lead to the following signs: high body temperature (Heat to the Fire Element), eats a lot but remains lean (Heat to Earth: food is burned in the stomach, but is not transformed into nutritive material), excessive thirst (Heat to Metal drying the lungs).

Treatment: 3 consecutive Excess Heat Elements, Fire-Earth-Metal: treat the Middle Element: Earth, by drinking lots of sugar cane juice to dissipate the Heat to Earth. In lack of Heat, the Earth will receive Heat from the Fire Element, in addition, it will no longer transmit Heat to the Metal. All 3 Elements will return to normal.

The glucose in the sugar cane juice will provide the person with energy for exercise and allows the Earth element to function to metabolize any excess sugar, the liquid volume of the juice will lower the Heat.

5. Other cases dealt with under the 5 Elements Act
a. Three consecutive Excess Heat Elements: Wood-Fire-Earth.
Dissipate the Heat from the Middle Element: Fire, by taking infusions of Chrysanthemum flowers to cool, and practice the "4-Step Tap Your Hands" exercise to circulate blood and heart energy.

b A person between 41 and 59 years old, has the following signs: indigestion, nausea, warmth in the body, cold hands
Systolic: 105 mmHg / Diastolic: 65 mmHg / Pulse: 66 bpm, the values measured in the left arm indicate a case of Insufficiency

Indigestion identifies that theElement Earth: Stomach is in Deficiency
Low diastolic pressure, low pulse and cold hands indicate a lack of sugar and blood.
Lack of blood will create internal heat.

Pressure at the 2 "Well" points of the stomach, located at the external nail angle of the second toe on the left and right: 45 St /Lidui/ Lệ Đoài does not awaken pain, confirms the Insufficient function of the stomach, in this case, the stomach is also affected in its structure.

Treatment: Raise the 3 values of the blood pressure in taking more glucose, food containing glucoce-lipid-protide, and practice QiQongTherapy exercises to increase saturation of oxygen in the blood.

c. An Excess of the Water Element will cause the prostate to swell, the prostate is part of the bladder, the "Well" points of the bladder meridians: 67V/Zhiyin/ Chí Âm will be painful under pressure.

The measurement at points 6 Sp /San Yin Jiao /Tam Âm Giao, at the feet will give a high diastolic pressure starting from 110 mmHg and up, indicates that the kidneys are in Excess. The more Excess, the more swollen would be the prostate, accompanied by oedema in the legs.

Treat with glucose, and practice the exercises: "Strengthen energy in the middle heater"/Nạp Khí Trung Tiêu, and "Bring your knees to your chest by blowing"/Kéo ép gối. Taking Desmodium Styracifolium/ Kim Tiền Thảo will promote urination.

d. The Deficient Earth will shrivel up muscles with heat to the skin. More seriously, the Earth will attack the Element Water, causing pain in the bones. The exercise: "Duck Walk"/ “Đi như vịt" treats the pain in the bones.

Notes
Edema in the legs will lead to heart failure. The dilation of the veins in the legs does not allow the blood to flow all the way back to the heart. In lack of venous return, the heart has to beat harder and faster to try to draw more blood, will exhaust itself.

The blood stagnating in the legs would not be re-oxygenated, the legs would not be nourished, surgical removal of the toes would be expected.

Treatment: Tighten the calves with an elastic bandage, then go up and down the stairs. The bandage tightens the veins, the contraction of the leg muscles helps the blood flow to the heart. Normal walking aggravates the situation, as the effect of gravity will further increase the stagnation of blood in the legs.
