EFFECTS OF DIETARY FLAVOURS ON SPLEEN-PANCREAS (PART 26)

A. Flavour Treatment
The Spleen-Pancreas is mentioned first, because it is the Earth Element that is the first to receive food and drink.

A complete diet, containing the 4 fundamental ingredients (glucose-protein-lipid-oxygen) and the 5 flavours (bitter-sweet-spicy-salty-acid), allows the organism to restore any imbalance, by itself, through the cycles of generation and domination, according to the Law of the 5 Elements.

Treatments without giving importance to the flavours of the 5 Elements, could be the source of many unpredictable illnesses.
A treatment by external flavouring is necessary, if there is a dietary deficiency.

1. Characteristics of food and beverages
A food or beverage has the following characteristics:
- Nature: hot, cold, neutral (lukewarm), nutrition (nourishing)
- Flavour: bitter-sweet-spicy-salty-acid-astringent -fade/ flavour combinations are possible, e.g. sweet and fade,....
- Energy: Which makes Energy go up /or which makes it go up and holds
Who brings Energy down / or who brings it down and holds
Who holds inside, to keep
Which expels to the outside, to eliminate

2. Correlation Tables
Energy Alimentation Mental
Systolic pressure Diastolic pressure Pulsation
Energy Blood Glycemia/Face complexion

Fire Earth Metal Water Wood
Flavors Bitter Sweet Spicy Salted Acidic
Energy Heat Stagnation Drought Cold Wind
Seasons Summer End of summer Autumn Winter Spring
Organs/Tissus Heart,Blood vessel,Nervous system Muscles, Flesh Skin, Fur Bones, Marrow, Teeth,Brain, Hair Nails, Tendons, Eyes

3. Flavour treatments
QiQongTherapy, a branch of Complementary Medicine, will identify a health status according to 4 important criteria: Heat-Cold-Excess-Insufficiency, using a blood pressure monitor, blood glucose meter, laser thermometer, pH paper, based on the 3 fundamental principles: Energy-Alimentation-Mental.

Each season is dominated by the flavour and energy of the season. Ex: In Spring, the Wind and the acidic flavor will be dominant, and will easily attack the Earth, putting it in Insufficiency, giving erratic pains due to the Cold Wind.

To prevent this, consume more of the sweet flavor of the Earth, to avoid any domination from the Wood.

To treat erratic pain in Spring, consume glucose regularly (to strengthen the Earth) and avoid draughts (avoid exposing yourself to air unnecessarily). Stop all glucose abuse as soon as the pain stops, and start again when the pain returns. The same reasoning applies to other disorders related to other Elements, depending on the seasons.

Each Element has 2 functions, either to generate (nourish) or to dominate (subjugate), in order to maintain the balance of the 3 consecutive Elements. It is by the reflex nervous system that the brain will emit the signal to trigger the treatment.

Example: When receiving the belly pain signal by Excess, the brain will signal the Wood Element to secrete acidic flavor to the Earth to decrease the Earth's Excess through the Domination cycle. This is only possible when all 5 Elements have their respective flavors.

If there is a deficiency in flavor, the Excess or Deficiency must be evaluated by the tensiometer, in order to feed the deficient flavor, in the above example, is to take the acidic flavor.

Or if one must intervene from the outside by acupuncture, one must Tonify the Wood (Liver) by its toning point, and Disperse the Earth (Stomach) at its dispersal point.

Fire will normally feed the Earth (generating cycle, outer circle).

The Fire will dominate the Metal, if the Fire is in Excess (cycle of domination, inner arrows).

Example 1: Three Consecutive Elements in Excess
- Fire - Earth - Metal, in Excess, it is necessary to use the cycle of domination to disperse the Element in the middle, the Earth, by an acid food (Wood dominates the Earth, the acidity is the flavour of Wood).
- The Earth weakened, no longer puts in Excess Metal, and will therefore accept in return the Excess Fire.
- The 3 consecutive Elements will thus be re-stabilized

Example 2: Three Consecutive Elements in Deficiency: Fire-Earth-Metal
Toning up the Middle Element, the Earth, by providing it with what it lacks, i.e. drinking coffee with glucose. The bitter taste of coffee will invigorate the Fire and the sweet taste of glucose will invigorate the Earth and at the same time provide Heat, indispensable for food digestion. The fortified Earth, no longer exhausts the Fire, will be able to strengthen the Metal. The 3 consecutive Elements are thus re-stabilized.

Example 3: A single Earth Element Deficient:
Tone up the Earth with its sweet taste:
- take Glucose if there is no sign of Heat.
- take cooled sugar cane juice, if there is a sign of Heat, because the liquid in the juice will compensate for the Heat.
These are simple examples, not taking into consideration the Excess or Deficiency of the Elements preceding and following the affected Elements.

4. Principle of treatment

Using Yang to treat Yin and vice versa
The area outside the circle is Yang, the area inside the circle is Yin.

-Example: To treat the Earth Yin (Spleen)
Using Yang Fire (Small Intestine/ Three Heater)

-Example: To treat the lungs (Metal Yin)
Use Earth Yang(Stomach)

-Example: To treat Wood Yang(Gall Bladder)
Use Water Yin(Kidneys)....

Example: Earth Yin (Spleen-Pancreas) in Insufficiency, will give diarrhea. In more severe cases, Spleen cancer gives liquid diarrhea about 20 times a day.

To treat with Fire Yang, means to take Glucose to feed the Earth in sweet flavor, moreover Glucose is Yang, thus bringing Heat.

NB sugar cane juice brings sweetness but not enough heat for the above mentioned case. Sugar cane juice is recommended if there is a sign of warmth in the heart.

Example: Excess Metal Yin(Lungs) will give hot sweat perspiration, the Metal must be weakened by consuming the bitter taste of the Fire Element (Fire dominates the Metal).

B. Treatment of Pulmonary Edema
It is the situation where there is water in the lungs. The cause is due to Cold Stagnation in the stomach. The Cold slows down the blood circulation, to remedy this, the heart has to beat harder and faster to raise the Heat and maintain the blood circulation, which heats and dries the lungs, because the heart is located between the lungs.

The stomach is cold, the lungs are warm, the difference in temperature at the interface of the stomach and the lungs will trigger the formation of water in the lungs. By analogy, in hot weather, a glass of cold water containing ice cubes will fog, or water, on the outside of the glass. This is the same phenomenon that causes water to condense in the lungs. Mechanical removal of water from the lungs only temporarily relieves the formation of water in the lungs.
The treatment consists of equalizing the temperature at the stomach-lung interface by warming the stomach and cooling the lungs.
- Cool the lungs by putting a cold towel on your upper back.
- Warm the stomach by putting an electric heating pad on the abdomen.
- Promote the flow of water out of the lungs by adopting the sitting position, with the backrest raised at 45 degrees. (Lying flat should be avoided).

C. Excess and Insufficiency
-

The following measurements are taken on the right arm, thus indicating liver disease in a person aged 41-59 years (References: 120-130 mmHg /70-80 mmHg /70-75 bpm).
- Systolic: 90 mmHg / Diastolic: 100 mmHg / Pulse: 65 bpm. Temperature LO, Indicate a state of Insufficiency and Cold. Lack of Energy, Blood, Sugar, Heat.

- Systolic: 180 mmHg / Diastolic: 120 mmHg / Pulse: 95 bpm Temperature LO Indicate a state of Excess and Cold. High blood pressure, lack of blood, with difficulty breathing and abdominal swelling due to water accumulation.

Notes
- Signs of Heart Failure: the person cannot raise and maintain stable arms horizontally. In this situation, the pulse will fluctuate around 60 beats per minute. The installation of a pacemaker is used to keep a fixed rhythm of the heartbeat. The rhythm can be increased or decreased depending on the circumstances. By taking glucose and practicing QiQongTherapy exercises, a pacemaker would not be needed. Ex: a pacemaker set at 55 beats per minute stops working, if the exercises have raised the heart rate to 60 beats per minute.
- Two people have the same blood sugar, yet one consumes more glucose than the other. The person who consumes more glucose is healthier because he or she has a higher ability to use glucose than the other person.
- The amount of glucose consumed per day varies from person to person depending on their activities, so never worry about the quantity of consumed glucose. What is important is that the person can keep blood glucose levels within the reference values:
On an empty stomach: 100 to 140 mg/dL or 6 to 8 mmol/L.
After meals: 140 to 180 mg/dL or 8 to 10 mmol/L.
